Review and Amendments to Syllabus
So far, we have learned:
- Sociologists and theorists
- Chomsky
- “All institutions are distrusted and not undisliked.” – Chomsky
- Foucault
- “Power is in the hands of the government” – Foucault
- Foucault believes that governments exert power by “punishing people who don’t obey“
- Habermas
- “Society is not only depending on technologies and new knowledge… but society is depending on a proper continuation, reconstruction, and criticism of its own traditions. Because these traditions are the ones who give us a certain orientation of how to understand man in society, man in the world.” – Habermas
- Weber
- Class is distinguished by property ownership (between the business owner and the worker)
- Status, prestige
- Class, income, wealth
- Power
Right now, we are segueing into the “details.” But, before we do that, we need to prepare a framework on the following:
- Social Organizations
- Social Interaction
- Social Institutions
I’m making a change in the syllabus. Recall, we are basing the semester on a 1,000 point grading scale:
- 150 for Essays = 50 + 50 + 50
- 150 for Journals/Participation = 50 + 50 + 50
- 200 for Midterm
- 500 for Final Paper
After reviewing the class’s Essay #1 submissions, I’ve discovered that the students need more help writing better. Students will gain new knowledge on academic writing through two sources:
- Professor Girdwood will teach students how to obtain academic sources
- The Writing Center will teach students proper writing technique
To achieve this, Professor Girdwood will perform a lecture specifically on “How to Obtain and Cite Academic Sources in College.” Also, the 150 points for journals/participation is now graded on this platform:
Students will still be submitting 3 essays. After each essay is submitted and graded the first time, the student will then take the essay to the writing center (bring a copy of the assignment instructions) and receive assistance from the writing center. The student will then bring back a revised copy of the same essay and submit that, with proof of assistance from the writing center, as “Journal #___.” Credit will be given for improvements made to the original submission.
The Theory Behind Essays and Journals
Students should be able to receive 100% A grades on the Essays for doing one thing: FOLLOWING THE DIRECTIONS
Students should be able to receive 100% A grades on the Journals for doing one thing: MAKING IMPROVEMENTS
