Last Will of James Hewitt

 

In the name of God Amen. I James Hewit of the Township of Yonge, County of Leeds and Province of Upper Canada, Considering the uncertainty of this mortal life and being of sound mind and memory, blessed be to God for the same, do make and publish this my last will and Testament in manner and form following, that is to say, first I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife, Norania, all the neat stock of which I am now seized to remain in her hands and for her use and benefit untill my beloved children Jacob Hewit, Edmond Hewit, Joseph Hewit, James Hewit, Ezra Hewit, Selphina Hewit and Perlina Hewit, shall become of full and lawful age and as long as the said Norania my wife shall remain my widow, and Also I give and bequeath unto my Wife Norania all that lot of Land known as Lot Number two in the Eleventh concession in the Township of Yonge to be and remain in her hands.. (illegible due to fold in the document) untill my above named beloved Children shall become of full and lawful age, and as long as, my Beloved wife Norania shall remain my widow––Then to be equally divided between my Beloved children above mentioned—Also I give and bequeath unto my Beloved son J____(unreadable) Hewit half of Lot Number two in the tenth concession of the Township of Yonge—I do likewise make and appoint my trusty and well beloved Brother Robert Hewit and my Beloved wife Norana as Executor and Executrix of this my last… (illegible due to fold in the document when filmed). I hereunto set my hand and Seal this second day of December in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty three.

and Delivered by the above Named James Hewit to be his last will and Testament in Presence of us who have hereunto subscribed as witnesses, in Presence of the Testator.

Note: This transcription was done from the actual microfilmed will filed in Brockville. A very abbreviated memorandum of the will appears in Johnstown District Land Book I, Memorial # 245. That memorial does not list the heirs.

 

The death date was probably a few days prior to the will being registered.
