Job Talk Presentation Outline
I will be presenting for 10-15 minutes on April 20, 2010. My presentation will be based around a PowerPoint that includes the materials that I have created in SOC 989. I will be applying to an imagined (or sort of real) job. I will be including:
- job application letter [hand-out]
- teaching philosophy [hand-out]
- research statement (research agenda) [hand-out]
- syllabus
- list of accomplishments and abilities (curriculum vitae) [hand-out]
- plans for funding and publication (within presentation)
- other materials that demonstrate my strength and focus as a job applicant (reference to my websites [studysports.net] and use of technology)
I will also be critiquing my classmates and accepting constructive suggestions.
I will then hand in revised versions of those materials in hard copy form. I am not required to hand in the PowerPoint (but I already did in during a previous class).
Some materials about research agendas and job application materials that are helpful and influenced my materials:

- Academic job application letter
- Writing an academic vita
- Job search for PhDs, Academy and Beyond
Related to a previous class discussion, this is a defense of the passive voice in writing (as vilfied by Becker):
